The Madrid Numismatic Event, In addition to being the premier numismatic event, it will also serve as the hub of Egyptological archaeology in Spain. From July 1–4, the event will feature an exhibition of the former collection of the Egyptian Museum of Melilla, considered by experts to be one of the most significant private collections of ancient Egyptian artifacts in the country, second only to the collections of the National Archaeological Museum and the Clos Foundation in Barcelona.
The official opening will take place on Wednesday, July 1. Event attendees will be able to admire it on July 2, 3, and 4 at the Cánovas Room at the Palace Hotel.
The Collection of the Egyptian Museum of Melilla
The exhibition consists of a carefully curated selection of just over fifty pieces (about 60 items) that stand out for their historical significance and excellent state of preservation. Among the most spectacular items to be displayed in the Cánovas Hall are several sarcophagi, a human mummy, mummies of sacred animals, bronze artifacts, false doors, and stelae. A tour that covers materials as diverse as stone, wood, and metal, offering a fascinating overview of Egyptian archaeology.
This iconic collection was assembled by the collector Gustavo Cabanillas, who for many years not only devoted his time, effort, and wealth to the preservation of these artifacts, but also actively funded archaeological excavations in Egypt itself and supported numerous public initiatives. Having been entrusted to us for the management of its sale, this exhibition offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view, all in one place, pieces that would otherwise remain hidden from public view.
The exhibition’s scientific and educational value is enhanced by the collaboration of two highly respected figures in the field: the renowned Egyptologist, journalist, and science communicator Nacho Ares, and Dra. María José López Grande, a professor at the Autonomous University of Madrid and a renowned expert on ancient Egypt.
With this initiative, the Madrid 2026 organizing committee reaffirms its ongoing commitment to innovation, growth, and adding cultural value beyond numismatic collecting and trade. On this occasion, the event not only focuses on numismatic heritage but also seeks to highlight, to promote and protect the practice of private collecting as a latent yet fundamental pillar for the preservation, restoration, and promotion of historical heritage.
